Happy New Year to all! Weather conditions were cooler for the 63 triathletes participating in race 1 of 2016. Congrats to all participating as many were still feeling the effects of Xmas cheer and the 2 week festive break. Also thanks to Vice President Val for organising the second Australia Day Tri season weekend away to Lennox Head. Accommodation payments are due! Stu Crawford was able to shoot great action shots of the members which can be viewed on Facebook. Thanks Stu!
The original ‘Dr Bike’ Roger Campbell was welcomed back for another bike safety segment. Roger has been very busy with 3 cycle shops now at Southport, Palm Beach & South Tweed and still enjoying his downhill mountain biking! Roger began Dr Bike about 8 years ago due to concerns about bike safety. Definitely a visionary for today’s ongoing needs for safety.
Key points were:
* Cycling up Fraser Drive & cars unable to see cyclists due to a 10sec loss of vision due to morning sun. Keep as far left as possible & make sure everyone has working front & back lights!
* “spinners are winners” – rather than use the big chain ring & push big gears spin up Fraser Drive & save energy in your legs for the run leg.
* turning into Ash Drive (pink crosses) – turn with your left foot high to avoid hitting the bitumen & especially to reduce a fall in wet conditions due to balance. Elite cyclists can corner fast but remember than have outstanding technique for all conditions.
Dougie ‘Scratcher’ Neil has advised this is the closest season ever for the Top 10 to be a pointscore champion. The word is Lancey absent for 2 weeks due to interstate travel & chaperoning Laura & Di could have now be number 1. Craig Broadhurst due to missing last week has been replaced by Danny Khazen. It is great to see so many in contention that give it their best each week. With 11 weeks to go it will be an interesting couple of months to see weekly points. Congrats to all.
